The Great "O" Antiphons As you'll notice in the Church Calendar of the Book of Common Prayer (still the Book of Common Prayer in England and other places around the world), December 16 is designated "O Sapientia." This is the Antiphon Upon Magnificat at Vespers for the 16th - and the first of 8 "Great 'O' Antiphons" for this octave before.

The O Antiphons refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before Christmas, Dec. with Dec. 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that evening being for the Christmas Vigil.
